EPA 608 exam — straight answers

EPA Section 608 certification is required under the Clean Air Act for anyone who maintains, service, repairs, or disposes of equipment that could release regulated refrigerants. There are four certification types: Type I (small appliances), Type II (high-pressure equipment), Type III (low-pressure equipment, like chillers), plus Core. Universal certification = Core + all three types.

For small appliances under the current recovery rule (40 CFR 82.156): 90% recovery efficiency when the appliance compressor is functioning, 80% when it is not. Larger systems use evacuation vacuum levels instead — for example 0 psig for high/medium-pressure equipment under 200 lb, and 25 mm Hg for low-pressure systems. Many prep banks still test the legacy '<200 lb = 80%, ≥200 lb = 90%' rule, so know both.

January 1, 2025: newly manufactured residential and light-commercial AC and heat-pump systems must use refrigerant with GWP 700 or lower (R-454B leads the switch), and installation restrictions apply from the same date, with a sell-through allowance for units manufactured before January 1, 2025. January 1, 2026 is the SEPARATE deadline for new variable-refrigerant-flow (VRF) systems. The AIM Act allowance phase-down steps down in 2024, 2029 and 2034 (30% of baseline, then 20%).
