EPA 608 guide

The EPA 608 exam, explained without the sales pitch

Section 608 certification is the legal requirement for anyone who services, maintains, or disposes of equipment that could release regulated refrigerants. There are four parts, you pass each one separately, and the exam is administered by EPA-approved testing organisations — not by course providers, and not by us.

What the exam actually contains

Candidates sit Core plus one or more equipment types. Core covers the rules every technician must know: refrigerant recovery, cylinder handling, leak-rate thresholds, and the pressure–temperature relationships behind them. The types then test the equipment class you actually work on.

  • Type I — small appliances (household fridges, window units, dehumidifiers)
  • Type II — high-pressure systems (most split AC, heat pumps, commercial refrigeration)
  • Type III — low-pressure systems (centrifugal chillers and similar)
  • Universal — Core plus all three types, passed as one credential

The pass mark and what happens if you miss it

The passing score is 70% for Core and 70% for each type. Sections are scored separately, so a strong Core result does not rescue a missed type — you retake what you missed. Retake fees and waiting periods are set by the testing organisation, so confirm them when you book.

Who administers it

The EPA does not run the exam. It recognises certifying programmes (the ESCO Institute is the best known) and those organisations deliver the test through proctored sites and, for some paths, mail-in or online-proctored options. VanClass is exam prep — audio lessons, quizzes and practice exams — and has no role in issuing certification.

What to do before exam day

  • Know which types your job needs; Universal is the usual goal, but Type II alone is common for residential service
  • Sit full length practice papers under time pressure — the free 30-question exam mirrors the real format and 70% bar
  • Drill the recovery and leak-rate numbers until they are automatic; they are reliable free marks
  • Book with a recognised testing organisation and check what identification and fees apply

Frequently asked

Is the EPA 608 exam hard?
It is a rules exam, not a physics exam. Most candidates who prepare with practice papers pass, but the numbers — recovery efficiency, vacuum levels, leak thresholds — must be memorised accurately, because they are tested verbatim.
Does the EPA 608 certification expire?
No. EPA Section 608 certification does not expire once passed. NATE certification is the one with a renewal cycle (16 continuing-education hours every two years).
